GAME ON!

At last, I get my much longed for chance to report on some real outdoor bowling..........although some of our early results might lend weight to the old adage “be careful what you wish for….!” Yes, our bowling season is well underway and win, lose or draw all our teams have been delighted to be back on the green and seeking to better our friends from our sister clubs.

Our Ladies Section got off to an encouraging start with an 8 – 2 win over local rivals Juniper Green BC but then lost by the same margin to Carrick Knowe BC.
Meanwhile in the Water of Leith BA Seniors League our ‘old boys’ have got off to an encouraging start with victories over Carrick Knowe BC and Sighthill BC but with a heavy loss to Juniper Green BC in between.

At the time of writing I hadn’t caught up with the detailed results for our West of Edinburgh BA Seniors Team – they tend to need a long nap after play on Thursday afternoons so I usually miss them when I arrive to call the Thursday night bingo session! (Only joking, boys!).
By their reckoning our First XVI have also got off to an encouraging start. They began with a narrow 3 – 2 defeat away to Juniper Green BC, then followed that up with a victory by the same score against Gorgie Mills BC before losing heavily away to one of the League’s bigger clubs, Bainfield BC. However, our team bounced back magnificently just a few hours ago with a terrific 3 – 2 victory over our great rivals Currie BC!

Only those, like me, who play for the Second XVI know just how unlucky we have been to lose our first 3 games! The 3-2, 4-1 and 5-0 defeats to Juniper Green BC, Gorgie Mills BC and Bainfield BC respectively mask the narrowness of the margins of defeat in the individual games. However, all is well tonight as we have just come back from Currie BC with a 4-1 victory! Hurrah (hic)! (The fact that I am highlighting both games in the C& B News will no doubt add a little extra spice to the return games – games which like tonight’s are always played in a great spirit by two sets of old friends.)

Tonight’s euphoria is tempered by the knowledge that this month we lost our dear friend May MacDougall (she of the smiling face!) whose death was tragically followed only a few days later by that of her husband Danny. They will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with all their family and friends at this difficult time.
